Just stopped at a nearby nursery and noticed their fig trees.  I asked them how frequently they watered their 15 gallon potted trees. Although their trees were a little taller (older), they stated they watered every day.  I mentioned that after 2 weeks of not watering, My moisture meter still reads high moisture content.  I am thinking I have to change my potting mix.

I had a mixture of coco coir, peat, vermiculite and a small amount of fine bark chips (hard to find in our area most of the year).  I think this blend is holding moisture far better than I thought it would.  And on top of that, aeration/drainage needs to improve by adding more pearlite, sand bark or something similar to the mix.

Hey jhawk for what its worth ive used this for all my figs. I water about every 3 or 4 days. There is also a smaller bag thats exclusively potting mix so its a slightly looser. I top it with cedar mulch chips. Smells nice and hleps keep insects away..Also those nurseries watsring those 15 gallon trees everyday is probavly because they should have been up potted long ago lol

Jhawka10,

Based on what you listed(coco coir, peat and vermiculite) those 3 items hold water, that is their main purpose to my experience.  I would not used them only.  I would mix it with perlite cause perlite does not hold in water.

LaFigGrower,
Yes, perlite needs to b upped as well. I did have more in it than typical potting soil, I believe.  Also planning on adding some natural clay, fragrance free calt litter. The clay holds some moisture aswell, but assists in porosity and add some nutients as well. Plus, it should no break down as fast as the organics do.
