Better than black Madeira
« on: May 22, 2020, 01:46:17 AM »
I’m fairly new to fig collecting and with some luck I came across some good varieties including the coveted black Madeira. But I keep seeing more and more figs with fancy foreign names touted as “must haves”, so I’m curious which ones live up to the hype.  I know our preferences all differ and we collect figs due to different qualities, but judging by taste alone, what would you consider to be “better than a black Madeira” ?
WL: figo preto, pastilliere, smith, socorro black, black zadar, MBSV (zone 9a)

Taste and growth is going to depend on your growing zone, the growing conditions, and other factors. It is possible that a Brown Turkey can taste better than some of the most HYPED up, fancy named figs. There is a page here that talks about hyped up figs and people that sell them. The best thing to do is remember the saying, "BUYER BEWARE".  You can find tons of info on this forum. Before you spend hundreds of dollars on the most "must haves" do some reading here and enjoy winning a few trees and cuttings. I have some very nice figs that were rooted over the winter and will produce next year but I have some Unknown fig trees that are producing great figs. I have another fig tree that is an unknown and  I was excited about and my dog ate the tree.
Wish List: Louisiana Lightening, Smith Fig, Dall' OSSO Fig, Socorro Black, BB-10,LSU Gold, LSU Thibodaux, LSU Jack Lily, LSU O'Rourke, UCR 184-15,Colonel Litman's Black Cross, Orphan fig, Adriatic JH, Ice Cream Banana, any variety banana,

We have a ton of figs are better than the Black Madeira. First let me back up just a second and welcome you to Southern figs forum, now we are glad that you've noticed this must have fig variety, these are sales techniques people trying to relieve you of your hard-earned money. And if you look the truth about the black Materia you will find best must have variety, or this is my number one fig or I rate this in my top ten list Exedra Exedra Exedra.

The Black Madeira in my growing zone is taking up space it's not a productive or vigorous fig we've only gotten a couple of figs off the trees. We look around at different photos we seen single figs not a plate full my question would be why if it's that productive.

When it comes down to fig trees and just like fruit trees I'm looking for production and quality. Just because you have some individuals that claim this is the best tasting fig they've ever eaten in their life, but if I have to wait 3 years to taste one and I mean just one versus have another fig trees produce tons of figs in 2 years I can guarantee which one I'm going to invest in.

So everyone needs to come to terms with what they wanting from a fig variety, being a vigorous grower, heavy production, disease resistance low maintenance and of course great tasty. If you look through the photos here on Southern figs forum you will see lots a varieties better than the Proclaim Black Madeira.
