Bidders causing high price for $510
« on: May 31, 2020, 01:44:38 AM »
Sometimes we blame sellers for high price of fig but sometimes it’s the bidders who raised the price high. Here is a fig tree that the seller started at $25 and bidders were desperate to have this variety and the highest bidder bought it for $510. This is insane. I won’t die if I don’t have this variety. The highest bidder is a newbie with one star.

This seller is partly to blame for the high prices.  I am on his FB group and he hypes up his trees there.  I think on one of his ads he says that this is his last tree of this variety.  Of course, this just makes everybody go into a bidding frenzy.  A day or two passes. On his FB page he says his wife found another one under the bed while dusting and puts it on the auction site.  Coincidental? I don't think so. How can a fig tree grow under the bed and be ready to sell? Again, another bidding frenzy and the tree is up to an obscene amount of money.  This guy knows what he is doing and plays his followers like puppets.

Ad is misleading too. "Up for auction is a CDD Mutant color fig tree in a one quart container  in my opinion this was the best tasting and best performing fig this year it's the 2nd year I have had the tree and it just kept producing fruit after fruit and no splitting even though we had a tremendous amount of rain The fruit has a nice tight eye which kept the bugs away." Clearly this is not a 2 year old tree and it's in a QUART container.

Spending this kind of money on any kind of tree is truly the most stupid thing I have ever seen after seeing the one for $425. Wake up people.  With the pandemic, do you really need or want to spend this kind of money on a tree?

Yes I believe Rudy May be right. If he is a true fig mafia member he propbably has a few ghost bidders to drive it up. True scammers are not dumb.

I am not a registered member of the auction site so I cannot see who was bidding to compare names.

Yes it is partly the Bidder's by the looks of their rating  of 1 and 3 it seems that they are new to figs, but what goes on behind the scene is the hype of this obvious fig variety. It has been hyped up on social media and in Facebook groups.

And as the advertising States the best fig that you will have in your collection is this not hyping sales pitch to lure people in ? Well I can tell you through personal experience it's not, and again I repeat that through personal experience which I've trialed here it's not, and please don't get me wrong it's a good fig but it's not the Holy Grail.

Newcomers to figs are just like sheep and are very easily influenced they think that they've got to have that newest rare fig or the best fig, and they think there's going to be a short supply figs have been around for thousands of years and this won't be any different plenty of time for you to get one.

You will notice that it's usually the same people that are hyping up figs time and time again and the sales pitch is always the same just look at the advertisement. I see many have such varieties in people's wishlist and we get emails after emails and PM's about this rare fig variety, the definition of rare Is supply and demand simply put.

And I'm going to point out something to you that's very obvious and simple are these Facebook groups and other forums platforms for these people to tell you about this new variety and how it's a must-have fig and in a few weeks it's available for big bucks. It's a shame that this happens on social media but we won't let it happen here.

I just got off the seller's FB group and wanted to see what was said about this particular variety.  I noticed another member of the group was saying how good it was and a must have for your collection.  I don't know much about this particular variety, but wouldn't this be a late harvesting variety?  If you live in the northeast, you would be lucky to get any fruit if the fall/winter arrived earlier than normal.  I have read many people complaining about that happening too.  To get fruit consistently, you would probably have to invest in a greenhouse.  So that just makes it a more expensive fig to own.

That's just the way business works, they create a demand and then fill it. Everything is marketed in this way. Cars, houses, fast food; you name it, it's marketed with propaganda. Good ole capitalism. It's never been honest.
Yes, it sucks. But that is the world we live in. Is it dumb to pay that much for a tree?
For me yes, but for a rich guy? Who cares how they spend their money?
I was lied to and ripped off the last time I bought a new car. It's a horrible, deceitful industry run by dishonest corporations and the lies of sleazy salespeople and general managers.
I learned my lesson. I'll never buy a new car again, but many others will and the same will happen to them. But even though people know this, they still line up to buy the latest model.
So how is that different from a fig tree?
It's up to us to be honest and kind as individuals. We can't expect others to behave the same.

Caveat emptor~Let the buyer beware.

So thank you JD, for giving us this forum so we don't have to go to the new fig dealer and pay top dollar for the latest convertible, all-wheel-drive, muscle fig which is probably no different than the one we already have sitting in the yard...
Want list: #1-Qalaat al Madiq #2- black Zadar, #3 LSU Red, #4 Ben's Golden Riverside/Robert's Golden Rainbow  #5-Madiera Island black.

Unbelieveable that an ordinary person would pay that amount for a plant that could easily die.  It might be different if that person worked for a commercial nursery and could submit the material for  one of the microscopic cell culture techniques and could get his money back after creating thousands of plants.   My take? let the seller keep his damn plant.
Wish list would include any of the LSU varieties at this point.  I have Celeste, Giant Celeste,  Golden Celeste, and a  whoknowswhatitis "brown turkey" type.  And LSU Gold. Have tried many of the Calif. types...all split and sour frightfully.
