Another Successful Air Layer: Kathleen's Black
« on: June 03, 2021, 12:34:19 PM »
I checked my air layers today and the Kathleen's Black had a nice root mass and was ready to be separated from the mother plant.   Here's the picture of the now independent offspring.

That is a nice looking plant. Would you expect any wilting in the first few days after removing air layer?

Hi Norman,
I remove about half or more of the leaves from the air layer.  That results in less respiration and more likely success in up potting.   I have only lost 1 Malta Black over the past three years doing it this way.

Arturo
Are you using the water bottle method, rooting ball, or bag method for your air layering? And are you using rooting hormones too?

Henry,

I am using a clear plastic ball.  I am trying with and without rooting powder.  Just want to see which way is better or if powder even matters

Arturo, Good luck with your air layers.  I think you're going to love this method of propagation and Carnac The Great sees a purchase of more rooting balls in your future. :)

John,

You are correct but I just need to find them.  I will show you the ones I am using as soon as I remove them.  Instead of removing unwanted branches, I will AL them to give them away.

Hi Arturo, Airlayers are great as giveaways.    And as for finding rooting balls, I got mine from either Amazon or eBay.  And I bought the medium size because I will use water bottles on bigger branches.
