Has anyone air layered a green stem branch?
« on: June 08, 2021, 12:51:02 PM »
I have a CLBC that is young, but growing like no tomorrow.   Because it is young, it has few lignified branches.   I am thinking about trying to air layer one of the long green branches to see how effective this approach is.   When I check on line, it seems like many people have found this to work well.   And since the shoots are green, there is no need to scrape on the sides of the nodes.

Has anyone tried to air layer green shoots?   I don't think I can harm the plant other than to lose a section of the branch if the air layer does not take.

John, I was so intrigued by everyone's success in air layering, but my fig tree is not big enough yet.  I was wondering if I can air layer my hydrangeas.  Have quite a few various colors and styles.  They are green wood that are growing now.  The old wood has leaves popping out.  I think I'm going to try it!  Wish me luck!!  :)

Janet,

Good luck with your rooting your plants.

John,

I want to say I read somewhere that it stated that you can root green branches.  I wish you the best of luck.

My Texas Everbearing fig was producing too many green suckers, so I removed them and try to root them. So far three of them have started rooting.

With two threads about rooting green cuttings and responses from members, it looks like it works.   I put about 10 cuttings I took off of recent air layer branches into cups of water and will hope for similar results.   I also set one air layer on a very aggressively growing shoot on a Colonel Littman's Black Cross yesterday and will check it at the end of the month for roots.

John

I really hopes it works and look forward to seeing your results. I will try the same next season as I aim to shape my young trees to set scaffolding branches.
