I have not had a problem with deer consistently doing this. Currently, only my white mulberry is in ground. When it started leafing out in the spring, deer stripped a couple branches and then left it alone after that. I guess they had a taste and decided there were better options for them elsewhere. They did the same to my green beans, stripping off all the leaves but leaving the beans themselves alone. I live in the country so deer aren't really hurting for food options here.

Thanks for your response. I live in the country too. The deer have not bothered the garden this year, but we started a new area. They came through and devoured all the leaves from the crowder peas but left the pods themselves. We are the only family in our area that grows trees, flowers and vegetables, so we feel like our yard is a mixed salad buffet the deer just love to sample!

Tyler,

I have never had mulberry.  Is it a sweet taste or tart.  Can you make jam with it or do you eat it straight from the plant?

I like them fresh, I like them dried, I like them in pies, I like them as wine, I like them in muffins,  I like them in cakes, I like them as wine (worth saying twice), They are sweet, they are juicy, and they grow wild all over the place in Pennsylvania and Florida

The traditional red mulberry (Morus rubra) like I have wild on my property has a blend of sweet and tart with a flavor that's distinctly "mulberry". The Pakistan one I grafted seemed to be more of a honey berry flavor with no tartness at all. The Morus Nigra varieties are said by many to be the best around, but I've not had one.

As far as how to eat them... GJRoberts about covered it. I like them fresh, plenty of other things for me to make jelly/preserves out of.

I purchased a white (color of the berry) mulberry last year and to be honest I did not like the taste.  It was too sweet and had no tartness.. I am giving it away to a relative as it is about 8 foot tall.  I then bought some cuttings and successfully rooted Oscar, World's Best, Maui, and one called Jan's Best.   I hope to try these next year.

John, I have read that some mulberries are very cold hardy.

Gerry,
I think I saw some growing wild in my neighborhood near a park.  When I take the dogs for their walk I will take a picture.  Only because when I first spotted it, the leaves reminded me of fig leaves.
Now I am curious if it is a Mulberry.

Update: I was able to get half a mulberry to ripen! Not bad for a graft only a couple months old. It was doing so well but the fruit dropped today. Of course I had to eat the ripe part and it was surprisingly very sweet with no detectable tartness.

Also as a bonus, I discovered two red mulberry trees ony property that I didn't know about. They didn't have much fruit and are somewhat choked out by other vegetation, but hey unlimited rootstock.
Tyler,

Great job at growing and grafting

Get some cuttings (with permission), strip most of the leaves, and stick them in a pot.  Free trees!
