Are there any masochists here?
« on: April 07, 2022, 08:24:03 AM »
Members,
I am germinating some Carolina Reaper peppers this spring.   For anyone unaware, this is considered one of, if not the number 1, hottest pepper in the world.  It looks like it grows to about 4 feet in height and produces a lot of peppers.   They need approximately 90 days to ripen fruit.   They can be grown in 5 gallon containers for those with limited garden space.

While I have a few friends who are willing to grow this variety, I will surely have extras, provided they continue to grow well over the next month.   Many friends have given me a "hard no" response when I offered them plants.   I am reaching out to members to see if anyone else is out there who would like to try growing this pepper.

From what I understand, even the skin on this pepper is extremely hot and all peppers should be handled while wearing vinyl or nitrile gloves.   Rubbing against the fruit might even cause a "chili burn".   I plan to put a few pots around my fig trees to discourage white tail deer from grazing on my figs.  I figure if they sniff or bite one pepper, they will never return.

If there is any interest, I would just ask the recipient to cover shipping.   That might be a bargain because I have seen listings online where two plants go for up to $30.  I would likely ship plants that are about 6 inches tall, in small seedling pots.     If there is any interest, I will reach out early in May when the plants are likely big enough to withstand the rigors of shipping.

I planted some seeds last year and I was told not to even touch the peppers because they were extremely hot. I did not get any fruit; however, they were beautiful plants.
WL: Any variety.

Julio,
I was worried about the need for a long growing season being needed for growing these in the Northeast.    If I get plants but no fruit, I may try to cut them back and try to overwinter them, with the hope of getting peppers in 2023.   Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I don't want the peppers. I want you to post a video of you eating one.
Many years ago at the beginning of this hottest pepper craze. My dad grew the then hottest Caribbean Red. I cut one in half and stuck my tongue to it. Instant fire and cough down in my chest. Nope Im done. I had several friends and coworkers claim they could eat them. Nope, they could not. They may have gotten it down but there was agony.
Please be safe.

Norman, I don’t plan to eat any of those peppers while they are fresh.  My goal is to dehydrate them and use minuscule amounts in chili, Jamaican Beef Patties, or similar dishes.    And I do mean tiny amounts of pepper in each recipe.

My Neighbor across the street grew them, he got plenty of peppers and trying to give them away was not very easy. They grew almost 6 ft tall, and an abundance of peppers. too hot for me I stick with jalapeno peppers without the seeds. lol

John,

I love spicy food and have being wanting to try hotter but I have heard the warning and so have not.  Last couple of years I was growing habaneros and I made a lot of sauces that I am running out of.  I also grow other peppers that I eat raw like: Aji Limon, Thai and Tabasco.  I am willing to try them.

You are like one of my Aunties who eats hot pepper raw. I can eat a little spicy food but not the one my nose will be running and tears coming out of my eyes.

John,

I have learned that maybe I don’t have to use as much sauce if it’s hotter and so I won’t run out like I did this yr.

Thank you for the offer

Ben,

I used to grow Scotch bonnets but I prefer habs.  I also have fatalii peppers.  I am waiting for them to grow.  I have also dehydrated peppers to make my own powders. I also ferment and pickled peppers but I still prefer fresh, raw peppers over any of the others types that I do.

Below is the last jar I have left that I made of peños and Thai peppers.  Life is good

After I get scorched with Carolina Reaper peppers in 2022, the Aji Charapita pepper is on my list of 2023 peppers to grow.   I think it will be one which I will be able to can successfully because of its small size.   It should also freeze well.

Just like with figs, I like to experiment with all different varieties of fruit trees and vegetables.  It's great to be able to harvest those vegetables not easily found in grocery stores.   My only limitations involve the wildlife in my area that can decimate my garden overnight.   For that reason, I can't grow lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and several other critter delicacies, unless they are in tall wire enclosures.

John,

I know what you mean.  The rabbits ate our tree collards last time and I still have not tried to grow them but that’s to the fact that I have not being able to purchase seeds again.  I got some kale seeds and they are growing pretty well.  The strange thing is they were suppose to be purple but they are not.  I am growing these in pots close to the house cause the rabbits stay away from my house.

Pics below are of 2 kale plants that we planted last year.  They are suppose to be the same but apparently their was some cross pollination but I am not complaining.  I now need to plant some more

Wow John,

You love pepper so much that I am scared of you lol. I only plant Bell peppers because of my wife can't eat pepper. Sometimes when I am eating spicy food she will just be looking at me.

I would have been surprised if you don't love hot peppers.
