After I get scorched with Carolina Reaper peppers in 2022, the Aji Charapita pepper is on my list of 2023 peppers to grow.   I think it will be one which I will be able to can successfully because of its small size.   It should also freeze well.

Just like with figs, I like to experiment with all different varieties of fruit trees and vegetables.  It's great to be able to harvest those vegetables not easily found in grocery stores.   My only limitations involve the wildlife in my area that can decimate my garden overnight.   For that reason, I can't grow lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and several other critter delicacies, unless they are in tall wire enclosures.

Wow John,

You love pepper so much that I am scared of you lol. I only plant Bell peppers because of my wife can't eat pepper. Sometimes when I am eating spicy food she will just be looking at me.

Ben,  My wife and I love spicy foods.   Sometimes we make dishes that we think are lacking heat but when serving to friends, they begin to sweat immediately.  During the summer months, there is nothing like a super spicy Jamaican Beef Patty.   I use Scotch Bonnets but I hope to be able to substitute some Carolina Reaper if I get any this year.   Dirty Rice and Beans is another dish we like with some HEAT.
Wish List: Col de Dam Gegantina, Corky's Honey Delight, Exquisito, St. Martin, Thermalito

John,

Once in awhile I eat spicy Jamaican Beef Patty. There is an African restaurant here called "Flames". Wow there food is very hot. I went with a friend and I told him that the food is very hot and we ordered for food, after eating two spoons he broke out in serious sweat. I busted out laughing. He never went back there.

John,

Never heard of this Jamaican beef patty.  I will have to google recipe to see how it is.  I use the peppers for Mexican/Indian/American dishes.  I like spicy curries.  The powders and sauces are for other dishes like gumbo or jambalaya or red beans and rice or chicken and rice(arroz con pollo), just to mention a couple of dishes.

Does anybody grow Aji Panca and Aji Amarillo. They are not hot, but they are great for seasoning.
WL: Any variety.

Arturo, A Jamaican friend of mine introduced me to these beef patties many years ago.   He lived in NYC and had access to a local Jamaican restaurant.   Where I live in the rural/suburban area of NJ, I have no such access so I decided to try making them on my own.   And I am glad I did.   I even make these patties for a big group of guys I go offshore fishing with in New England.   That's a lot of patties for 20+ guys at a time.   And there are never leftovers.

They freeze well and they reheat just as well in an oven or toaster oven.    If there is any interest by a member here, I can post my recipe in the backyard gardener section.

John,

That is a lot of patties.  I will say, yes to posting the recipe for the patties.  I love different types of foods especially spicy food.

Sergeant,

Sorry to say but I don’t have them any more.  I was growing aji Amarillo but last yr the late freeze killed all my seedling and I have not gotten any more seeds.  At the moment, the only aji that I am growing is the aji limon.  The freeze took some peppers that I really did not have any seeds saved.  I lost over a dozen varieties.  If I do get more seeds, I will let you know.

Here's my Jamaican Beef Patty recipe.   When preparing the meat filling, it is important to cook until most of the liquid boils off.    That will make it easier to fill the pastry when you get to that point.   You can also refrigerate the meat filling and stuff at a later time when the fat has coagulated a little bit.    Don't overfill or you won't be able to seal the pastry.
