Bananas...
« on: September 18, 2022, 12:39:02 PM »
I have being coming on here the last couple of time cause we got the little bananas to ripen. The kids have being eating them like crazy.  This nanas are not big at all but they are soo sweet when you let them mature on the plant.

Pod to maturity:   It takes around 6 months
Size of fruit:        Around 3 to 4 inches long
Fruit taste:          Sweet banana, a lot sweeter than store nana
Skin/Peel:           Very thin.  I would even say, paper thin
Bunch:                This bunch had 4 hands and each hand had 6 to 8 bananas
Variety:               Dwarf Brazilian

Did not weigh any of these cause I just forgot.  The skin is soo thin that it does not take long for these nanas to start turning from yellow to dark brown.  We cut the bunch down right after some of the nanas were yellow.

What variety is it? I wonder if they would produce in SC with overwintering in the greenhouse or garage. We have ornamental bananas. I used to dig them up in the fall but forgot one year and they survived. They don't grow as large as they do when stored but I'm very interested in growing edible varieties. Just haven't done much research yet.
Wish List: Tashkent; Imp. Celeste; Nixon Peace; I-258, Texas Peach, LSU O'Rourke, Thibodeaux, Scott's Yellow; heirloom varieties- Ocracoke Is, unknowns; Other: World's Best Mulberry

LeConte,

Dwarf Brazilian.  I thought I had mentioned what I think it is.  This is based on all the research I have done cause it did not turn out to be what I was told it was.   If you want to try let me know, I will send you a pup if you cover the shipping....

I was thinking of doing a nana contest but have not seen much interest so I decided not to.  I also have:
Double Mahoi
Namwah
Dwarf Cavendish
Burro(goes by other names also)

I see the variety now. I don't know how I missed that. I'm nosy enough. I would absolutely be interested in trying to grow it. Shipping is no problem. I did a little research and it appears to be suitable for South Carolina.

LeConte,

You did not see the variety cause I did forget to put it.  I went back and added it after you mentioned it. Thank you for letting me know.

Would you like the pup now or in the spring? Sorry for not coming on here sooner.  How tall do you want the pup?

Ok. That makes me feel better. LOL

If you think it is safe to ship in the fall, I'm okay with that. It should probably be a smaller one for the sake of shipping costs. You can pm me whenever you're ready so we can work out logistics.

Thanks for sharing. My seven-year-old will be so thrilled to grow her own bananas!

LeConte,

Sorry for the late response.  As soon as the banana plants wake up, I will send you one.  I want to make sure I send you a live plant.   Again, sorry for the late response
