Fig cutting season is upon us here's some facts
« on: November 02, 2018, 12:24:06 PM »
Here's some information for everyone and we hope this helps ! ! Here on Southern figs we don't allow selling or soliciting to sell because of the chaos that it creates. We know that there are some scammers on eBay and there are lists and publications of those people. But I see more and more False Publications on selling fig cuttings and reputable sellers. And all this is being done to manipulate the market for a “Selected Few”. Some of the myths out there are, if you don't have a watermark photo you're not a reputable seller, or if you don't belong to a fig forum you're not a reputable seller, or if your prices are too low it's probably not the right variety and you're not a reputable seller.  And all this has been done by a certain few sellers because of greed and to manipulate the market. So some of the main facts are that these people that are trying to manipulate the market have also been suspended from eBay and Figbid and other places so they have problems selling their cuttings. So folks, like Paul Harvey would say, stay tuned for the rest of the story. For years now a few people have been making their living selling fig cuttings and fig trees for very high prices being that they have a new variety or rare variety.  The definition of rare is based upon supply and demand which makes the prices go higher because of limited supply.  Remember the fact is these trees have been around for thousands of years. The only exception to this is if it has been pollinated and is a new hybrid. So here's the facts: almost everyone has gotten cuttings and started their trees from a third party source who are the very same ones that have been manipulating the fig tree selling market and have sold their cuttings for very high prices.  So now the “Fig Community” having bought those “rare” fig trees and or cuttings are now competitors to them and some try selling the same variety they got from this “third party source” to try to recoup some of their money back.  So the buzz is the “third party source people” will start rumors such as “if they are selling at a lower price that they are not reputable sellers”. Also we have been notified that the rules to selling have been changed on other forums now so if you're not the owner of the site or the “Select” few that have been grandfathered in and thus are the “Godfathers” and if you aren’t one of these people you can't list and sell. This is sad to us especially for the new fig enthusiast that you should only buy from certain people that are trying to manipulate the market. Groups or forums are free sites and the rules should apply for everyone and not be a dictatorship. There are a lot of places by very reputable sellers to buy your cuttings from at discount prices.  Also why would anybody have to prepay and wait for months to get their cuttings and pay higher prices when they can pay and get it now at a lower cost?  Also there is a risk that some months from now you may find that, “oh we run out and we didn't have that”, and they refund your money and used your money for all those months when you could have it purchased and already be growing it. There has been a lot of that in the last few years and this is why they no longer accept PayPal because they have been suspended by PayPal.  Paypal is there to protect you, and this should be a warning sign to all of us. And one last note: the price has nothing to do with the variety that you are buying if you're paying for it now it should be shipped now, but if you're having to wait for months it should be at a lower price. We hope this helps the new fig enthusiast who is trying to make sense of it all.

You so right Mojo. I find it hilarious that there are a bunch of new people who are validating some of these sellers when they bought their first fig tree this year! Not even knowing if it is correct yet. It's like they hear one time from one random person that XYZ fig is really good so they just MUST have it, Seems like a very strange motive to buy a particular fig tree. There are a couple people I've seen buy what must be like 50 trees this year alone all for probably $40 or so plus shipping and are happy about it. Its not a good look. I'm looking forward to giving away as much as possible.

Sadly, there is a kind of fever in fig collecting that can help cause this manipulation by the ruthless sellers who are in control of forums and websites and who are writing for selling to multiply sales and further manipulate.  So each fig is now the “hottest” or “best tasting”.  After awhile some people may come to their senses, but many will have to wait to see that many figs are so similar, which is like non astringent persimmons, where people in the end realize that they taste similar, and thus the fig tree collection which was gained at great cost may come one day to appear to be an expensive folly.

I have watched one fig forum die and I fear F4F is in the same spiral in damning any seller other than members, calling people criminals with no proof and I am concerned when member/sellers try to get other members to support their beef with a possible shady seller.  I have some very nice trees purchased from peoples yards and watched as the forum(s) went into the full attack mode on them as "they don't know what they are selling" all over the Forum. Then I laughed when they "got word" and ripped the forum a new one as the figs had been supplied by LSU years ago and were ID'ed and cutting taken by LSU Ag. recently.  God help you if you have Russian name.......saw the same person "damned" twice just based on her name!

I use a term to define the latest marketing gimmick of the Greatest Of All Time fig, or GOAT fig. We have people on forums that drive prices through the roof  for older common figs like Smith simply promoting them as the GOAT. Ranting about illegal figs on one thread and on another all the people lining up to get the latest smuggled fig! Just because Customs did not "catch" them does not in any way make it legal.  I hope this forum takes a firm stand on not promoting illegal figs.

There are many types of figs and I'm sorry I do not subscribe to the GOAT fig hyperbole, what I like in a fig some others may not so I will determine what a fig tastes like TO ME. Not into taste descriptions as I am already the most picky eater in the world.  I hear raves about figs I find boring in my location and my taste buds.

I am also on a niche car Forum that of the 30 latest posts last night had 13 on there concerning ONE member/vendor, with time and bad monitoring Forums will easily degrade into a marketing tool. Glad this one will not!

I’m kind of sad that fig prices have gotten as high as they are now. I heard in the past that trees used to be the price of what some cuttings are now. I think the problem comes from trying to make a living off just figs despite how easy it is to propagate fig trees. You do not need alot of training to stick branches in a pot which is why some sellers have become so afraid of competitors. But isn’t that why most nurseries never put their eggs into one basket? Most nurseries make sure to offer a variety of plants to establish a varied enough customer base to keep things running. Figs are too niche and fast growing to make a living selling only figs for a long period of time. And if certain varieties are very expensive to purchase, you can bet most buyers will want to get a slice of the profit after dropping their wallet on said expensive variety. Things seemed more stable and peaceful when figs were only a hobby or maybe even as a side gig to just offset cost of things like fertilizer or potting mix.

I just began acquiring figs in August and cuttings for 7 different varieties cost me a Benjamin and more. I can feel the temptation of joining the trend and selling extras as high as I can. I’d rather share my extras with everyone and be shared with in return though. All parties can expand their collection without any money or hard feelings involved if we returned to sharing our figs freely. I’m not in a good financial position to be buying figs either so I must stop purchasing lol. I’ll try to root all my extras and offer some for anyone interested later in the season. I’m still looking for more varieties but I hope to make space (Calcinera perhaps? :) ) by giving away alot. I’m looking forward to the sharing festivities here when it’s spring :)

All fruit trees seem to have this trend .... i saw a cherry tree on StarkBros for almost 100.00.  It seems that market and availability can cause jacked up prices also!  I have received some great trees from Stark but also not so great so price is not the way to shop.

I guess since people started growing their own food forest, tree sellers decided to jack up prices.  I don’t like it but I do understand their reasoning.  It happens on everything

Steve here,

it's greed  lol,
Hell you can ask JD i bich haven to pay 75.00 for quarantine fig tree fee
and i GOT THE TREE FOR FREE but it,s for our breeding stuff.

When i sell my stuff I start at around 10.00 - 20.00 not 199.99  it's only a few that do that but if they would sell at low cost that would get more biz and the customer are happy and they buy more from you.

but that's will make them start lying and make up new names on old figs just to drive the price up.
because they can't find a new high dollar fig. so just make one up.

lol

Steve,

I agree with you, sell for $10 to $20 and you will get more repeat business and happier customers. Also your happy customers will spread word about your excellent trees and prices.  I don’t see why people get so greedy.  Just be happy and enjoy what you have, don’t try to cheat others of what they have.

Buyers also contribute to the high price of figs. Look at FigBid.com and see how buyers are bidding for figs. I-258, Black Madeira, White Madeira, Socorro Black and the likes, people are bidding them for hundreds of dollars. That's the reason I don't have these varieties, they are too expensive.
Wishlist: Figoin, Socorro Black, CDD Blanc, St. Rita, Black Madeira dwarf, Louisiana Fig Varieties, Louisiana Lightening, Buzzone Nero, LSU Strawberry, BNR, Giant Brown Turkey, Mutant Fig, White Lebanese.

Although a "newbie" to this forum, I am definitely NOT a newbie to figs.  Over the last 40 years I have trialed probably that same number of figs but in the end I have returned to the common local "Celeste" for my main crop.  I once went Paul Starnes ( a local GA self identified fig nut), who lived in Newnan, GA and in his backyard he must have had 200+ figs in pots.  Nonetheless, he as well returned to the local "Celeste" as his standby. But yes, it is the season for fig cuttings and I would look forward to getting a start of some of the LSU varieties
Wish list would include any of the LSU varieties at this point.  I have Celeste, Giant Celeste,  Golden Celeste, and a  whoknowswhatitis "brown turkey" type.  And LSU Gold. Have tried many of the Calif. types...all split and sour frightfully.
