What tree is this???
« on: August 10, 2021, 04:21:41 PM »
Does anyone know what the pictured tree is?

Look at those clusters of figs on such a small tree.

Is it a cluster fig?  There is a specialty store that carries these figs and they are called cluster figs.  I found on google.
Here is the website:https://specialtyproduce.com/produce/Cluster_Figs_20666.php.
It give a detailed history about them.

Unless it is something more common in the United States.

Now I am curious to see if anyone knows what it is.

Close.   Someone must have been peaking at the partially exposed tab.

John.. How do you get your fig trees to stay compact?   Mine seem to grow tall (3 or 4 feet) but do not have many limbs nor compactness.  If Thomas is correct, I got one of those from JD just after the hurricane and I too have figs but they are spaced about 6 inches apart?  Great looking tree no matter the variety.  Always enjoy looking at your trees.

Tom is correct with the addition of the word "honey".

I will be offering this tree as my delayed Memorial Day giveaway, since we now have a lot more engagement on the part of members.

Heads up!   Between now and Labor Day, I will post the actual giveaway and rules.  I have not decided if I will give an extended period of time to enter the contest (allowing more members to compete) or if I will only offer a 12 hour window to enter (in this scenario, the members who check in frequently would have the better chance to win).   I am leaning towards the latter approach.  Stay tuned as there will not be any advance notice of my delayed giveaway in honor of my friend Sam Barcellona.

This Louisiana Green Honey fig was a local find by JD.  Look at his pictures and descriptions of this fig which is high on his list of favorites.    And this variety appears to be very precocious.   This is JD's Louisiana Green Honey, not his Louisiana Green Honey #2.

Ashley,
My trees grow on my driveway.   They get more than 12 hours of sunlight each day and the black top is quite warm.    Some of my varieties are less compact, so genetics also become a factor in growth habit.

Thanks John.. I thought you might have pruned them to be compact.  I am going to need to cut mine back this fall/winter.  I am going to have to study up on that but I have some time as it doesn't really get cold here until January or February.

John,

What a beautiful and long lasting tribute to honor your friend Sam Barcelona.  Sorry for your loss.
