Fig trees and cuttings / Bogddy Alfa Fig Tree - August 2022 from Andrea
« Last post by FigMamaJanet on March 17, 2023, 05:59:39 PM »
Andrea,

My fig trees have been sleeping in my attached, unheated garage.  I will attach pictures.
Bogddy Alfa Fig has leaves trying to open.  She is my first fig tree to wake up this year.  Some of my others have green buds and a few have a tiny fig that popped out.

Here's hoping that Bogddy Alfa Fig will do great this year :)

I want to thank you again for the contest that I won our tree on.

Hope you are doing well.

I can do a giveaway. I know I have a Acciano, received cuttings from John last summer, and a Godfather. Maybe others.

My Figs and Tree Pictures / Re: Red Lebanese Bekka Valley 2023

What a great -and simple- method to test cold hardiness! Now, what variety do I test it on? Chicago Hardy? An unknown local fig? Some fancy variety? I can take some of the cuttings that I have started now and move them in larger pots for the next two years, then root a cutting from one of them to test along side them when I plant them in-ground in a couple of years.

Andrea, Chicago Hardy should be able to survive outside without protection.  I would test on another variety considered cold hardy.

I left some pots out to see if they could take the cold that we got.  I only did it cause I had a spare that I could afford to lose.  I did lose them but lesson learned.

Arturo, I have never had a single Red Lebanese Bekka Valley split on me.  This one dries on the tree very nicely.
John,

Thanks for the response.  I wish you the best of luck with your new trees.

John,

Great story.  Being a while but I heard it before.  Always great hearing stories of where trees come from.  Thank you.

Arturo, If you are able to run a giveaway, I can plan to give you either a Red Lebanese Bekka Valley fig plant or Vasilika Black.  The RLBV looks like it would do real well in your wet climate.  Vasilika Black is another great berry fig, but I don’t know how it performs in real wet areas.  It does do extremely well in areas with long growing seasons.
John,

Agree with you but who would complain about receiving a free fig tree.  I would definitely would not.
