Orphan Fig
« on: February 06, 2020, 03:59:05 PM »
I am looking for some Orphan fig cuttings. It seems that this is a very hard fig to find.
I have some starter trees that I would trade if interested in trading.

Thank you
Tom

Never heard of it.  At first, I thought, huh?  An orphan fig??  Then I searched and discovered that it actually is its name.  What does it taste like?  What about it triggered you to want it?

I have one Orphan cutting I am currently rooting.  Once my tree is off and running, I am more than happy to send you a couple cuttings if you haven't won a tree here by then or gotten one somewhere else.  The only caveat is I won't be able to verify its true to type until it fruits.  You can have cuttings before that though if you want them.

I've searched, but your photos are teasers, cause you don't list what they taste like.   ;)  Judging by the color, it could be melon or honey, but until they invent taste-able websites and photos, all I can do is guess.

What triggers me to want this figis the size of this thing. It is the size of a baseball. I have not tasted one, but reading about it it is very sweet. I would like to have this to see if a fig that big is as sweet as being said and to share it with others.

THB1961,

That is exactly what prompted me to buy the one cutting - the figs look huge!  Unfortunately, I could only afford the one cutting at the time but am also happy to share if the little guy roots for me.

I was the fortunate winner of a beautiful little rooted Orphan Fig tree in a small plastic cup from JD. I have not killed it, yet, so in a year or two I may have something nice to share.

My first ever successful cutting was Orphan and early last year it died. Then I bought an air layer from FigBid in Spring last year and after some time it died also. It is because of the size of the fruit that is the reason I want it so bad.

Have other varieties that you have also died or just that one?

If just that one variety, what are you doing differently, be it water, feeding, soil, light, heat, wind, container size, etc?

If other varieties have died, you need to tell us more of what you are doing.  Pictures are very helpful.

If this is your only variety, then same thing, tell us more and show us what you are doing.  Someone might be able to spot something that could be the reason for two deaths of the same variety.

When they died, was it a wilty death where they just gave up the ghost, wilted and died?  Or was it a leaves dried out while stems and branches stayed upright, then they died, too?

Do you have a gnat infestation?

I can feel your pain at wanting the Orphan so badly and not having success at growing it. :(

No one is helping me control my fig addiction.   A huge fig that is supposedly sweet.   My wish list just grew by one.

LOL!  I know, sometimes I hate reading descriptions and seeing pictures.  I just know I am going to want another variety.  That's what happened to me here, too, with the Orphan.

The Orphan rooted cutting died because of heat and I didn't fertilize it. The air layer started with leaves falling off and gradually dried up. it was in a not too shady place.

Okay, slow death is generally caused by different reasons than a fast, wilty death.  The, "not too shady place" is a great clue to what might have happened.  If it was hot and not too shady, it just could not handle the growing conditions.  The young rooted cuttings, and an air-layer is effectively the same thing as a cutting that has been rooted, are not as strong as an older tree.  Yes, air layers should be a bit stronger, but if the top is not balanced to the roots, it is not.  It's still a bit of the mother tree that has been allowed to root and cut off from her.

Dappled sunlight, enough regular water, away from strong winds is what rooted and growing cuttings need when they are outdoors.  Outdoor light is not the same as indoor artificial light.  For best success, introduce each growing condition change by itself and give the baby several days to adjust to the change.  Do a few, give it a longer break, do a few more, and another longer break.  Don't try to pull the band-aid off in one fell swoop.
