ISO CDD Mutant Color Bicolor
« on: May 16, 2020, 05:53:39 AM »
I am intrigued about this fig (CDD Mutan Color Bicolor) since it sold in a bidding website for figs for a lot of money. I would like to have it, anyone willing to trade?  Thanks, regards, Jose

Hi Jose,  I believe this was the fig JD gave away as #100 which was won by Roy (Swamplife).   I believe all CdD varieties are highly regarded and the bicolor nature of the Mutant variety makes it even more desired.   I don't know if there is any real taste difference among the CdD varieties as all mine are just cuttings this year.   Maybe JD can give feedback.

It’s hard to acquire Mutante! I hope I can get my hands on it myself, beautiful fig! Keep trying that’s what makes this more exciting to look to ask to trade to find 🤗
Good Luck!

Here's my baby CDD Mutante.   With a little luck and a lot of growth, maybe, just maybe, I will have an air layer or two in 2022.

Hi Arturo,
I could not find a cutting, so i splurged on this young plant.

My fig addiction this spring was supported by the money I receive from being part of the J&J Covid-19 clinical trial.   I am a firm believer in the need to control this indiscriminate disease through vaccination.   I also have two co-morbidities that would put me at higher risk should the virus infect me.  By participating in the study, I received the vaccine before most other Americans (and it was confirmed that I received vaccine, not placebo in November 2020), got paid for each study visit, have added CDD Mutante, CDD Rimada, and Bass' Favorite Fig to my collection on J&J's money, and will enable J&J to monitor my antibody levels for at least two years so they can determine how long the effects of the vaccine last and whether a booster is needed and how such a booster affects our immune response.  After working for nearly 40 years on clinical trials from the side of pharmaceutical manufacturers, and studying data for tens of thousands of other volunteers, this is my small way of giving back to society.   Win, win.

And I still have a few leftover J&J funds to purchase two other trees on my wish list, Bordissot Negra Rimada and Figoin, once they become available.   Then, give these plants a couple of years to grow and we might find them available here as free giveaways.  Only on SFF.   Win, win, win.

Hi John

Thank you for volunteering and leading the way in the vaccine trials! I am now vaccinated and appreciate folks like you being the guinea pig so others may follow in your footsteps to beat this virus.

Back to the topic - is the only difference with the CdD-Mutante from other CdD varieties the bicolor skin? I’ve read the CdD-Gris may ripen earlier so curious what differentiates the CdD-Mutante as it almost looks like the Rimada with darker stripes. Have you tasted fruit from them both to be able to share an opinion?

Henry

Henry,
I have only tasted a couple CDD Blanca figs last year.  I have a two year old CDD Noir, so I am hoping to get a few figs from that tree this fall.  I rooted two CDD Grise cuttings this spring, but likely won't get fruit this year to taste.   Mutante and Rimada rooted cuttings are also from 2021, so I can't personally comment on taste......yet.

If I am correct, CDD Rimada will have green and light yellow striping wile Mutante appears to have rainbow striping.  It also appears Mutante may be a smaller sized fig, but I won't know for sure until my plants get bigger.

I was given two CDD Gigantina cuttings this winter but both died when potted.  I heard Gegantina is the biggest of the CDD varieties and tastes great.   IK'll try again next year.
