Unknown Louisiana Bayou Homestead
« on: February 25, 2023, 07:02:50 AM »
I have been wondering how this variety fared with others and opinions about the variety overall.  I got some fruit off my plants last year but they weren't very large.  About the size of a Celeste.  I am curious if they were larger for anybody else and their growth habit.  Mine were slow growing, but it's possible that it was because of the potting mix I used.

Denise, like you, I got Celeste size fruit.   The flavor was not special either.   This heirloom may just be from a very old Celeste tree on the bayou.   If the flavor and productivity don't blow me away this year in it's third season of growth, it will go into the cull pile.   I will leave room in my collection for my Figoin and Nerucciolo d'elba plants, which also produce small but very flavorable figs.

John, I sorta feel relieved to read your opinion because I was not impressed with it.  On the other hand, I would feel guilty of culling this tree because JD made a big deal out of it. I am in the process of getting my trees ready for this year's growing season and wasn't sure what to do with it. I will give it another year to see how it performs.  I have two of them and may give one of them away at the Fig A Rama if somebody wants it.

I don't want to keep trees that have small fruits like the Celeste. A friend gave me an unknown tree last year and 6 months later he said it was a Celeste after speaking to the person who gave it to him.  We'll see.
