Hello From SW Georgia

I actually joined the forum in April 2021, but was never active due to some chronic health issues. I’m back and hope to be an active member and learn about some different varieties of fig. I grew up with all of my grandparents and great aunts/uncles having fig trees. They were all the same variety, which I believe was a Brown Turkey fig. All of the older generation had figs, pears, scuppernongs, plums, and pomegranate.

I do not have any fig trees at the moment, but I’m an avid gardener. I hope to have several varieties by this time next year. I’m quite interested in the LSU varieties, but open to any suggestions for figs which will do well in the humid Deep South.

Hi Elizbeth,

Welcome! You have come to the best place to learn about figs that do well in the humid Deep South.  Not from me (I'm too far north), but many members here deal with heat and humidity and rain impacting their figs.

What I'd love to know, though, is what are scuppernogs?  Is this a delicious fruit I've been missing out on all my life, like Arturo's guavas?

Scuppernongs are a variety of Muscadine grapes. They are green/bronze in color and very sweet.

Welcome, Elizabeth. Pretty soon, I think you will know more about figs than you ever would have imagined. I'm in SC, and I'm also learning about and adding LSU varieties to test in my environment. There are so many to choose from based on your taste preferences. I think you will find that there are many other noteworthy varieties that will be just as enticing as the LSUs. It's a trap!

We also grow scuppernongs/muscadines. We currently have about 10 varieties and 3 different table grapes that are just starting. I'd love to hear your ideas about growing those.

Welcome! There are lots of folks here who are from GA.  I am one of them and live in the Warner Robins/Perry area which is 2 hours north of you.  There is a fig event that you may want to put on your calendar called the Fig A Rama.  For the past 2 years it has been held on the last Saturday in July in Watkinsville.   It's a great place to get to know fellow growers, swap trees,  and have the opportunity to learn more about the cultivation of figs.  There is no selling of trees at this event.

Welcome Elizabeth and we are happy that you are doing well healthwise. I am in Georgia, Carrollton area and I have more than 200 figs that I'm growing mostly in containers and few in the ground of different varieties. I have LSU Purple fig plant I can give to you. Let me know if you are interested.

Elizabeth I am glad you have knowledge about Muscadine. I have been thinking of planting one but I don't know anything about caring for Muscadine other than eating it. I will be reaching out to you about Muscadine.
