The future of this forum
« on: February 08, 2023, 09:51:46 AM »
Mike Brookins posted on the SouthernFigsForum Facebook site that the founder of this forum, JD Puckett, passed away on January 29th.

JD controlled almost all aspects of this original forum.   If anyone is aware of other members who have administrative rights to this forum, including but not limited to allowing entrance of new members, technical problem resolution, contract matters, etc, can those individuals step forward and inform members where this forum will go in the near future?   I believe our contract for hosting services for this forum expire in the next several months and it would only be fair to members to have some notice regarding the future of our beloved forum.

John,

For the moment we are safe.  I have at least partial admin rights (possibly full) to this site.  I do not know his hosting agreements though so it may be short lived.

Oh wow. I'm so sorry to hear about JD's passing. He was very generous to share several hours of his time talking with me on the phone about fig genetic testing.

Terry, if we can pitch in to help with the cost of hosting, please let us know how we can do that.
Wish List: The best tasting, cold-hardy, highly productive, non-wasp variety - whether I can pronounce it or not - and another 5 acres to plant figs on.

There was no greater friend for the Fig community. His goal was to spread the love of figs by friendly sharing of information, and plants free of costs. There are many like me who will miss him. He was a good, and kind person and one of the top fig breeders and growers in the world.

While I was a Global moderator, I really had no administration or control of the Forum.  Sorry I couldn't help with any of that information.

Hello fellow Fig folks,

I took the winter off and was browsing Fig sites today - only to see this terrible news about our dear friend JD.

I am sad to hear this news of our friends passing. I know that he had recently lost his father and I believe his brother, on top of the destruction of his orchard in the last hurricane. I am not active much on the net but I do hope the forum can be archived on facebook for everyone.

I met JD about 7 years ago thru Fig culture. He was a larger than life southern persona!...and boy could he talk your ear off with all kinds of knowledge.

I don't know if he ever got his orchard going again, but I have no doubt he is sitting under a Fig tree right now smiling down on us. He is in a better place, that I can assure you.

If there are more details that can be posted here, please do so for all of us that are thankful for JDs jokes and wisdom.

Hug your loved ones, life is short!

God Bless

JD was a great and very generous man.  I used to talked to him on the phone and man the knowledge he had.  He will be missed.  He was the first person on here that welcomed me in and shared some cuttings to help start my fig collection.  The fig community lost an amazing person. He will be missed.  I will be planting the Dr Clark in his honor in my yard.  He talked greatly about it and so I will do it.
