I wonder if members of the mafia share with each other hard to find varieties?

So being a newbie,  I really don’t know how much a fig tree are worth.    Until about 1 year ago,  all I knew was black mission and Italian fig.  Never heard if anything else.  I been trying to grow a fig on my terrace, on and off for several years,  and they always died by the end of the year.  But this past year we bought a house and I want to plant one.  I searched “fig tree” and all of a sudden a million varieties came up.  Naturally, I then search for “best fig”,  and several YouTube videos are talking about ben’s golden riverside.  “ NOW THATS WHAT I NEED”. I saw cuttings for $80, so naturally I would think a rooted tree would be much more.  If I had the money, sure why not, but I don’t. Since cutting are the cheapest way of getting these highly sought out figs, I’ll just work on my rooting skills.  And maybe I’ll find a diamond in the rough.  But I can see how people are willing to pay top dollar for these.  Also you can’t blame the seller,  for selling at high prices if there are buyers.  I just wish there were places I can buy ( not bid) some cuttings at a reasonable price.  Even here, except for a few,  you can one trade if you have something that someone wants,  so unless you have a really sought out variety,  your out of luck. Your common mission won’t get you a more exotic fig.  But one feature about this site.  It gives everyone a chance to get the rare cutting.  I guess I’ll keep on putting in “number 101”!  Thanks everyone. BTW,  I been learning a lot from here and everyone here is super helpful.
Robert’s Golden Rainbow, Ben’s Golden Riverside, Black Mediera KK,  raspberry latte,  and any cuttings I can use to perfect propagation methods.

There are online nurseries where you can buy cuttings, but that time of year has come and gone.  It's done when the trees are dormant.  I noticed prices are determined by how easily found they are.  You can also get some through Facebook from folks who just want reimbursement for postage.  If you are just learning how to grow figs, I don't suggest starting with a premier fig like Ben's Golden Riverside or Bass's Favorite Fig.  Start with what is sold locally at the big box stores or the local plant nurseries in your area.  As you get your confidence and skills to a comfortable level, then you can break the bank if you wish.  Me, I am too cheap to spend more than $40-$50 on a tree as it's just a fruit tree.

I see you're doing some searching but I think you done a quick search and really didn't get in a full grasp of this variety. Are you basing this being the best big off YouTube videos? The same places that lead you into buying from a site that they have filled with advertisement to make money on?

The Ben's golden Riverside was named by Ben but the rightful name is Roberts golden rainbow this is where Ben got his cuttings from. And you're right I cannot blame the seller for hyping the fig up, but I can assume that you all fail victims to this and maybe being contributors.

The definition of rare is supply and demand, just like gas prices right now there's no demand for gas as everybody's at home guess what prices have dropped through the floor nobody needs it nobody's buying this would be an excellent rule of thumb to follow.

And the other little piece of advice is patience I can guarantee you that the people that paid $300 for a couple of cuttings and the ones that paid $200 for some cuttings and the ones that are paying $100 for one cutting there fig when it ripens will taste no better than the one that I have for twenty bucks well actually I got mine for free. So I guess it would be up to every individual to justify why they pay that much money for a fig variety that's normally $29.95 just a thought

I have a Col de Dame Mutant Bi-Color that I rooted this year. I bought cuttings from "Dave" and it was not hard to root. So if it hurts your wallet to buy a particular fig wait till cuttings are being sold at the end of the year. I happen to like unusual fig plants. I also have Jolly Tiger with variegated leaves and even found a place in my heart for some Palmata Hybrids that will never fruit for me but the leaves are huge and outstanding. I have most of the striped figs as well, Martencia Rimada, Panachee, and a few others. If you just want to eat a fig you can certainly find something in in a low cost range to satisfy your tastes. The reason some varieties go for so much is all about supply and demand, and being first to have the variety. Such as unk. Burgan. The problem is not the seller it's people bidding and the greed of wanting to be the first. It is the search for the perfect fig.
wish list: fig wasps in SC, and Victoria, Edith's Raspberry, and Craven's Craven
