Tamarillo (tree tomatoe)
« on: July 03, 2021, 02:10:04 PM »
A couple do years ago I got some tamarillo seeds.  The kids and I planted them and they grew.  Fast forward a couple yrs and now the plants are growing fruits. They were something for the kids and I to do together.  I was not even sure I could keep the plants alive for 2 yrs much less get them to fruit.  Now wife and I can’t wait for the fruit to mature.  To be continued....

I admit to never having heard of the tamarillo and had to look it up after reading your post! You are educating others and exposing people to new fruits! Thank you for sharing and I look forward to your future pictures. It’s also really admirable to know this is a family hobby!

Arturo,

What a great looking Tamarillo (tomato) Tree!  Never knew of this type of tomato.  Keep us up-to-date on the progress and pictures.  Do they turn color, like orange or red as most tomatoes  do?  Is the taste similar to a regular tomato?

I am going to call you "Farmer Arturo" from now on :)

Henry,

Thank you for the kind words.  Wife and I try to have the kids involved as much as possible.  We want well rounded kids.  We also don’t want them to just sit in front of the tv nor tablet.

Janet,

Thank you ma’am.  Just love trying new things that are out there but not around here.  Keep in mind that I have not tasted one yet so I can only comment what I have read.  I have read them to being some sweet and others tart but perfect for salsas.  They come in different colors.  I have heard of red(which is the one I suppose to have gotten seeds for), Orange, yellow and purple.

Norman,

We want to have different things at all times, just to guarantee that will have something to snack on while in the backyard.   As soon as we hear of something different, we look for requirements and how we can grow it if possible.

Arturo,

Keep us up-dated on any new additions to your garden.  It is so interesting so see how different regions are able to grow certain plants and others not.  If I wasn't on the SouthernFigsForum, I would have never heard of the various figs, garden vegetables and other fruiting trees that are not grown in coastal New Jersey.

Thank you for educating me and others, I am sure!!

Good luck on your gardening and take pictures.  :)

Janet,

Feels like I have to cause otherwise the pollinators won’t visit.  Can’t believe I have to bribe them to visit my yard and pollinate my fruit flowers.

Ben,

Unfortunately between the hurricane winds and tornado winds, I was not able to ripen one this yr.  there is always next yr.

If you don’t mind me asking, which one did you get?   I started mine from seeds but it is suppose to be red but I won’t know till I get some fruits.
